Blue sky oblique portrait, to Potato Wharf, Manchester South Junction Viaduct crossing Castlefield Canal Basin, Manchester

The Canal Basin at Castlefield, Manchester, is crossed by four large railway viaducts. The southern viaduct in the group (seen here, looking north) is the red brick viaduct of the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway built in 1849. A m span cast iron bridge takes the viaduct across the Rochdale Canal (foreground view). Behind it rises the wrought iron truss girder 1877 Cornbrook Viaduct, currently used by Metrolink Trams. The trans-Pennine Rochdale Canal joined the Castlefield Canal Basin from the north-east in 1802. In the background rises the tubular steel Great Northern Viaduct, dating to 1894. A Metrolink Tram is seen crossing the Cornbrook Viaduct.
