BAND. The Leslie Cornet Band was organized in June, 1880,with sixteen pieces, and Enoch Dowling as leader. A fineuniform and a good outfit have since been purchased, andthe band is free from debt. Most of its members are oldplayers, and the organization is a creditable one. Itsmusic is new and excellent, and the execution thereof isworthy of bands of greater note. They wererefiigees, who, having espoused the Protestant faith, foundpersecution and trial their lot, and fled to the they found their way to Holland, where the Dutchprefix Van was adopted, which rendered the name VanCouver. signifying from concealment. The famous navigator, George Vancouver, was a de-scendant of this race, and two members of the family emi-grated to the United States, and located in New Jersey,where many of the descendants now reside. Among themembers of this family were Bergen and Anna House!Covert, whose son Mahlon, the subject of this biography,was born in Seneca Co., N. Y., to which he removed at anearly day with his parents, Sept. 26, 1808. They reared afamily of eight children, of whom Mahlon was the seventh.
