Telegraphy, discovered only a few years before,had but recently come into general use, and our railroadsystem, since grown to such gigantic proportions, wasthen in comparative infancy. The old methods ofstarch-making, which had been practiced for hundredsof years, were still in vogue, and with some slight mod-ifications and clumsy machinery furnished the imperfectmanufactures that supplied the starch with which ourgrandmothers dressed their laces and stiffened theirruffles half a century ago. Corn, wheat, rice, potatoesand other vegetables and cereals had been well known forages as factors in the starch manufactu
