Forestier disease, also known as diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). X-ray of a 42 year old woman's cervical spine (neck bones, side view). This is a rare disease where excessive bone growth occurs along the sides of the vertebrae (back bones). This patient's cervical vertebrae have fused (arrows) as a result of the disease, causing pain and stiffness. Forestier disease is a form of arthritis, but the exact cause is unknown.
