Gill's Egypt baseline survey. British astronomer David Gill (1843-1914, centre) using an altazimuth to carry out a baseline survey in 1875 from the roof of the Hotel de L'Europe. He was staying at this hotel in Alexandria, Egypt, with his wife who had travelled from Cannes, France, to join him. Gill had been taking part in observations of the 1874 Transit of Venus. Others present are the Hungarian astronomer and geodetic surveyor Moritz Low (left) and a Herr Dotter (between Low and Gill). Gill's work in this period gained him a reputation as a meticulous observer. He was later appointed to the Cape Observatory, South Africa.
