Sign - "Do not walk or drive on the lava", Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Several hundred camels are kept in the Timanfaya area and used to provide camel rides to tourists. The Canary Islands are all volcanic islands (several million years old) but in addition, Lanzarote suffered several years of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the 18th and 19th Centuries, so much so that the islanders felt that the devil had come. Timanfaya was the name of one of the villages destroyed by these eruptions and means Fire Mountain. It is dangerous to walk on certain lava covered areas.
