Hip replacement. View of surgeons performing hip replacement surgery. The surgeon seen in the image is using a mallet to chip away bone before inserting the hip replacement. Hip replacements are usually performed on elderly patients whose joints have eroded and are stiff and painful due to osteoarthritis. After the old hip is cut away, the pelvic bone is then hollowed out. The artificial socket is then attached using special cement. An artificial ball is then attached to the head of the femur, and this is inserted into the socket to complete the procedure. The surgeons are wearing protective gloves, caps, face masks and gowns to maintain a sterile environment.
