MOVABLE BATTERIES OF THE INDIANS AT PLASSEY.—Plassey was the victory by which in 1757 Lord Clive won India for the English. His opponent, the Prince of Bengal, had learned from the Europeans to use cannon, and adopting the idea with true Oriental munificence, he planted his great guns on platforms upheld on the backs of many bullocks, so that the battery could be moved around at will. The device astonished the English, but could not withhold them from their final victory.
