That itwas a place of great importance in the time of Henry the Third,is manifeft form hiftory ; for when Simon Montfort took thatprince prifoner, in the forty fecond year of his reign, it was one©f the three fqrtrefles which he required to be delivered up tohim, and it was afterwards chofen by Mortimer for the prifonof king Edward the Second. It was repaired by king Henrythe Seventh, and afterwards by king Charles the Firft, fofwhom it was a garrifonj but being taken by the parliamentforces, they plundered and demolished it. The fcite of thipcaftle is near half a mile in circumference j and by the ruins, itappears to have been not only a ftrong but magnificent building
