Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Heating and VentilatingEngineers, Philadelphia, Pa., January, 1921. 37 38 Transactions of Am. Soc. of Engineers minutes more, the second third of the coal charge is tired, and the last third afterthe expiration of another 15 minutes. The test starts when the first coal is fired, and it will be apparent that all the coal is fired within 30 minutes from thestarting of the test. At the end of 8 hours the fire is completely quenched with water and the refusedried and weighed. The equivalent coal value of the refuse is then calculated andsubtracted from the original weight of coal fired. When soft coal is used a fire bed is gradually built up for from 5 to 8 hours, and the grates are always shaken and ash pit cleaned just prior to starting thetest, with the fire surface practically level with bottom of fire door. The ash pitis then cleaned and the actual test starts immediately. Careful record must be kept. FIG. 1. The test is then run for not less than 36 hours. Exactly the sameprocedure is followed in firing and shaking grates at the end of test as was prac-tised when the test started. Samples of coal and ash are taken and analyzed. All tests are so controlled as to require not more than in. of water draftpressure at any time, o)id the temperature rise of the air passing through thefurnace is maintained absolutely constant throughout the entire test. Special tem-perature indicating apparatus is absolutely essential in maintaining a constant tem-perature rise. In no case, will mercury thermometers be satisfactory for measuringoutlet temperatures, because of the serious radiation effects on such thermometers. The amount of air passing
