The Centenary Performance of The Planets by Gustav Holst played by the Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra in Thaxted Church 13 October 2018 The first performamce of The Planets was in a private performance in Queens Hall London on 29 September 1918. Gustav Holst wrote The Planets, a Suite for Large Orchestra, when he lived in Thaxted north west Essex during 1914-1915. The tune in the middle of 'Jupiter' was set to words by Cecil Spring Rice several years after the first performance of The Planets to become known as 'I vow to Thee my Country' but Holst just named it 'Thaxted'. On Saturday evening The Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra founded in 1956 and comprised of amateur musicians conducted by Richard Hull performed the The Planets in a packed Thaxted Church as well as The Lark Ascending ( soloist the professional musician Jake Walker from Thaxted ) by Ralph Vaughan Williams ( a friend of Holst ).
