And the widows of Ashur are loud in their wail,And the idols are broken in the temple of Baal; And the might of the Gentile, unsmote by the sword,Hath melted like snow in the glance of the Lord. Lord Byron. XXIV.—NEBUCHADNEZZAR. EBUCHADNEZZAR,* the king of Babylon, once con-quered the city of Jerusa-lem. Among his prisonerswas Daniel,2 a wise youngprince of Judah. God gave himknowledge and skill in all learn-ing and wisdom, and the powerto understand all visions anddreams. He, and three otheryoung princes, were often brought before the king, whofound them ten times better in all matters of wisdomthan any other persons in his realm. Once the king dreamed a dream which troubled himgreatly as he lay awake at night, but the next morninghe had forgotten it. He called the wisest men of hiskingdom and commanded them to tell him what he haddreamed and what the dream meant. They told himit was impossible for any man to tell him what he hadforgotten, especially as it had really never existed andwas but the baseless fabric of a drearn. When Daniel heard of the kings trouble, he askedGod to tell him the dream. God revealed it to him in 1 Nebuchadnezzar = nebu-kad-nezzar. 2 Daniel = danyel. 126
