Winter firewood stacks at the Russian Orthodox Puhtitsa convent in Eastern Estonia

The convent of Puhtitsa is in the borderlands in Estonia. Clsoe to the Russian border it is a major orthodox place of worship for the Russian speaking ethnic minority in Estonia. Its nuns are fierce independent women who do not suffer fools gladly - as I discovered when doing story about them for the UK's Financial Times. I parked my car outside the walls of the convent - and they told me simply - it will be gone in the morning if you leave it there. So i stayed the night - locked away in a garret - and was served dinner in a alone in a vast dining room. The nuns are self sufficient - and long for the day when Estonia will again be absorbed into Mother Russia.
