Total solar eclipse lecture. Artwork of Irish astronomer Sir Robert Stawell Ball (centre, 1840-1913) giving a lecture on total solar eclipses. He and his audience are off Vadso, Norway, on the cruise ship S. Y. Norse King, planning to view the total solar eclipse of 9 August 1896. A total of 165 professional and amateur astronomers included official eclipse expeditions sent by the British Astronomical Association, the Royal Society, and the Royal Astronomical Society. The eclipse was visible across much of Europe and Asia. Overcast skies prevented direct observations at Vadso, but those present still experienced the dramatic darkness that arrived at totality.
