An identical pair,known as the Lion gates, wasput up by George I betweenthe colossal stone piers erect-ed by Queen Anne as anentrance to Bushey Park,which so dwarf them thatDefoe speaks of them aspitiful low gates. One otherroyal gate appears in thedesign book surmounted bythe imperial crown and palmbranches (Fig. 18). Thetwo sides differ, and seem-ingly neither were exe-cuted, unless the
