I have been trying to grow carna- tions in a new house, 20x70, running east and west. It is four feet high- to the eaves and eleven feet to the ridge. The walls are double-boarded with shiplap, with three thicknesses of building paper between. There is no glass in the walls. The west end abuts on the boiler house; the east end ad- joins a shed at the back of the resi- dence. There are three solid beds, raised one foot, with two aisles. I have a hot water boiler, rated to carry 1,500 feet. I have been trying to heat two houses with it, the one mentioned and an old one, 20x80 and the same height as the new one. The old house contains benches. I have no trouble with the old house, but I cannot keep the new one warm and the beds have poor drainage. I want to repipe the new house and build benches in the coming summer. I shall not trouble you by describing the present heating system, except to say that it is fed by a 3-inch flow, two feet below the ridge. Please tell me a good way to repipe this house. Is it necessary to pipe under the mid- dle bench f The outside temperature in this part of Ontario drops occasion- ally to 20 degrees below zero, but not often. V. M. There is nothing in the letter to indicate the cause of the trouble, and the new house should be easier to heat than the old one. The boiler, if up to its rating, should be amply large enough to heat the two houses. Espe- cially in the more northern sections of the country, and for houses where a temperature of less than 60 degrees is desired, I would prefer to use raised benches and run two or three of the return pipes under each bench, not only to give bottom heat but to hasten the evaporation of the drip
