I participated in the battle of Corsville. Va., June 13, and Black 20. Our brigade, which consisted of the 69th, 155th. 160th. and 170th NewYork Infantry, was ordered to join the Army of the Potomac. We arrivedin time to participate in the battle of Spottsylvania. May 18. 1864. On the24th of the same month my regiment took part in the battle of North Anna,. Saving the Bridge. and during this engagement I was sent to the brigade commander (Colonel Mclver), for reenforcements. The 170th New York (Colonel Murphy), wasordered to accompany me. and we got back in time to save the works. Myregiment had held the enemy in check some time with bayonets only, as theirammunition was entirely expended. It was at this battle that Colonel Murphy of the 170th New York wasput under arrest by General Hancock for showing the white flag withoutorders. He was afterward made a member of Congress from his State. At the battle of Talopotomy. May 28. 1864, my regiment builtbreastworks with bayonets for pick-axes, and tin cups for spades, performingthe labor in such a thorough manner that the enemy found the defense verydifficult to capture.
