IContlnued from \n\ge Fred Howard, president of Howard & Smith, has returned from a business trip to San Francisco in time for tlie open- ing day of tlie rose sliow at Ninth and Olive streets. A call at the store was interesting and instructive along the line of rose culture. The new Los Angeles rose, of course, was much in evidence, and the way tiiis tose has been received all over the country must be most pleasing to Mr. Howard, the originator. Besides this variety, the ])opularity of which is now assured, the writer was shown a beautiful seedling, as yet unnamed, a cross between Rayon d'Or and Frau Karl Drusehki. This is a thick-petaled, full and beautiful rose, possibly a little deficient in fragrance, but otherwise perfect, with a golden yellow tint that is most attractive. In a hasty look around it was impossible to note all the good thi]igs exhibited, but one thing that deserves special note was the beautiful panel of roses, lit from below by an artificial light, which showed uj) the colors and detail of roses to perfection. This was quite a novel idea and was worked out to perfection by Alanager Grover, of the cut flower department. A fine line of amarylliscs, for which this concern is famous, was also shown, as well as other flowers from the Montebcllo nurseries. Shows like these not only boost the concern that stages them, but they also create an interest in flowers and horticulture generally that
