Ladd, son of Charles Haven and Susan (Fowle) Ladd, was bornin Alexandria, Va., August 31, 1845. At an early age, his parents removedto Portsmouth, N. H., where he attended the public schools. He finishedhis preparation for college at the Phillips Academy, Exter, N. H., class of1863. He then entered the University with advanced standing and remaineduntil 1865; was a member of the Athenian Socity and the A 1 IJ Fraternity;served as vice-president of his class. He engaged in business in New York city for some years and then locatedin Galveston,
