Museum Barberini housed in Replica of Baroque Barberini Palace building built by Carl von Gontard in 1771–1772 on the Old Market Square, Humboldtstraße 5-6, Potsdam, Brandenburg The museum was funded by the German billionaire Hasso Plattner and opened in spring 2017. The original Barberini Palace was built in 1771–72 under Frederick the Great as a grand townhouse near the City Palace or Stadtschloss. The building was designed by the architects Georg Christian Unger and Carl von Gontard, and was modeled on the Baroque Palazzo Barberini in Rome. The building was destroyed in April 1945 during an Allied air attack, and the ruins were torn down in 1948 and the site was used as a park and a parking lot. During the GDR era, the construction of a municipal theatre began. Following the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany, the shell of the theatre was demolished and a temporary aluminium-clad structure served as a theatre until 2006. The museum, designed by the architects Hilmer & Sattler und Albrecht, was sponsored by the Hasso Plattner Foundation and built between 2013 and 2016.
