Rescue ladder still in place following dramatic rescues fo trapped residents in a fire


London Fire Brigade were called to reports of fire at a four storey block of flats in Daffodil Gardens East London,. The fire started in a stairwell of the building mid afternoon, flames took hold of much of the plastic fixtures and fittings internally and externally on all four floors. Heavy smoke then affected the building trapping some residents who were unable to leave the building. 20 people did leave the building before the arrival of the fire service, however 12 others had to be rescued by fire crews using ladders. There were 9 reported casualties, including a mother and young child who were taken to hospital for suspected smoke inhalation, two males were also taken to hospital one suffering burns to his hand and arm, the other male suffering an undisclosed hand injury. the other 5 casualties are believed to have been treated on scene by London ambulance service fro minor smoke inhalation not requiring hospital treatment. The cause of the fire is not known at the time of writing and is being investigated b fire and police. Local residents have complained recently that the area has been blighted with teenage youths causing trouble in the area it is understood but not confirmed that youths were seen shortly before the fire broke out.
