MAJOR-GENERAL CARL SCHURZ, M vjor-General Carl Schurz was born in Liblar, nearCologne, Prussia, March 2, 1829. After studying at thegymnasium of Cologne, he entered the University ofBonn in 1S46. At the beginning of the revolution of1S4S he joined Gottfried Kinkel, professor of rhetoric inthe University,in the publication of a Liberal newspaper,of which at one time he was the sole conductor. In thespring of [849, in consequence of an attempt to promotean insurrection at Bonn, he fled with Kinkel to the Palat-inate, entered the revolutionary army as adjutant, andtook part in the defence of Rastadt. On the surrenderof that fortress he escaped to Switzerland. In [850 hereturned secretly to Germany and effected the escape ofKinkel from the fortress of Spandau. In the spring of 1851 Schurz was in Paris as corre-spondent for German journals, and he afterwards spenta year in teaching in London.
