Heart and lungs. Illustration of the human body showing the heart and lungs. The trachea (windpipe) leads from the larynx (voicebox) to the lungs (pink) where it splits into the two main bronchi. Across the bottom of the lungs is the thoracic diaphragm, a sheet of muscle that separates the thoracic (chest) cavity from the abdominal cavity. At centre is the heart, a muscular organ that pumps blood around the body. Seen branching from the aortic arch above the heart are the right and left common carotid arteries that supply the head and neck, and the right and left subclavian arteries that supply the arms.
