Neonatal incubator. Newborn baby (neonate) in an incubator with a myelomeningocele birth defect. This is the most severe form of spina bifida. Treatment involves surgery to correct and repair the defect. Inside the incubator, levels of oxygen, temperature and humidity are controlled to provide the baby with ideal conditions for survival. The incubator also protects from airborne infection. Portholes allow handling of the baby, and there are smaller holes through which monitoring cables, and intravenous and respiratory tubing can pass. The display (upper right) shows the baby's heartbeat, respiration and blood oxygen levels.
