Niessen batted him at will; there were eight runs scored, two men on bases, no one out. Then the Retailers' captain made a master stroke. He called the "great unknown" in from the side lines to the box. The Niessen captain protested weakly this time. He saw victory in sight. Just one little hit meant a victory. The game went on. The unknown struck out five of the next six men who faced him and threw the others out at first; score: Retailers 13, Niessen 12. John Claus caught extreme- ly well. The tail board of the truck flew out at Fifty-fourth street and hurled some of the players to the ground. Many were rushed to the hospital. Mathews, pitcher, Kennedy, left field, cousinj of the market manager, and Albert Ersiner had their injuries treated; the last-named is quite badly hurt. The team then pluckily wont to Belmont and offered to play the game. The Independents chivalrously declined, saying they would gladly play another time. Speaking for the team, Robert A. Craig said that the team would play their games even if he had to pitch himself.
