Kyu Asakura Residence Garden is in Tokyo's Daikanyama district, a fashionable quarter of Shibuya Ward. The home and garden, commissioned in 1919 by Torajiro Asakura, who was chairman of the Metropolitan Assembly at that time. Gardens during the Meiji and Taisho periods were conspicuously grandiose adjuncts to the residences of the affluent and powerful. Hints of pride and hubris were characteristic of the landscapes of those eras, designs that were commissioned by rising industrialists, politicians and the new order of aristocracy created by the giving of titles such as baron or marquis to a chosen few. In the Kyu Asakura Garden, winding and undulating paths run beneath a thick canopy of trees, screening off any potentially intrusive elements. Water basins, huge lanterns, large stones, rounded stepping stones and roof tiles embedded beside paths add rustic touches that evoke aesthetics of the tea garden.
