The boats are carried up and down this roadway in halves (eachboat being made in two complete pieces) in a cradle,11 a greatwooden framework that dips down into the water, clutches halfof the boat, and lifts it out into the air. Turbine wheels furnishthe power, and there are two cradles,1 one going up while theother comes down. To the east of the Broad street bridge the canal passes underthe old market, a distance of three blocks. Here there is no towpath and the horses have to be left behind. It is a practical tun-nel.
