THE WORK OF THE PAY OFFICE Tunbridge House,Liphook, Hants, April 24th, Mr. Gammell, When mother wrote me saying that youwanted some sort of a letter from me for theschool magazine, I said to myself, Whatsthe use^ I dont know anything about thewar. Now that is literally true because,after all, I am in more or less of a backwaterof the war, and although I have seen no endof preparations for war I have not seen any-thing of the real thing. As you know, I have been over in this coun-try about fourteen months and in that time alot of things have happened. It was a yearago yesterday that the battle of Ypres started—and it was the battle of Ypres that put anend to the hopes of the 23rd Battalion of goingto the front as a unit. We got word on the26th of April last year that we must send adraft to the front to replace some of the cas-ualties in the battle.
