Clarke, Gardener to Sir William Plowden,Aston Rowant House, or Curl.—In consequence of thecold and changeable weather, trees in exposedpositions and ineffectively protected are attackedby the leaf-blister fungus, Esoascus first stage can be detected by a pale, powderybloom on the underside of some of the leavessimilar to an attack of mildew. If allowed tocontinue unabated the disease develops quickly, and soon the whole leaf is in a malformedand useless condition; the young shoots arelikewise attacked, and the tender growthsultimately shrivel and die. Spray such treestwice each week with sulphide of potassiumat the strength of half-an-ounce dissolved in1 gallon of warm soft water. Continue the spray-ings until healthy growth has will now be making growth. If they are requiredto form bushes the shoots may be allowed togrow, excepting the lower ones, for at least 1 footof clear stem is necessary. If standards arerequired, pinch all the shoots excepting theleading one. Should fan-trained or double ortreble upright cordons be required, cut outentirely all the branches that will not be requiredfor the proper formation of the trees.
