A peculiarity of Colognes churches — for COLO&AIE. it is possessed by the Apostles Church, , and St. Andrews — is the westernapse. Such a member is not unique to Cologne,for it exists in the cathedral at Nevers, inFrance, and there are yet other examples inGermany; but its use is sufficiently uncommonto warrant speculation as to its purpose. 267 Cathedrals and Churches of the Rhine The Apostles Church has this feature mosthighly developed. The edifice is a noble piledating from early in the eleventh century, butreconstructed two centuries later, to whichperiod it really belongs so far as its generalcharacteristics are concerned. Not all the church architecture of Cologneis Gothic; indeed the churches of the Apostlesand St. Martin each show^ the Lombard influ-ence to a marked degree.
