Prehistoric, Miocene Landscape

Illustration of an ideal landscape of the Miocene, from Louis Figuier's The World Before the Deluge, 1867 American edition. Visible are a mastodon, a rhinoceros, and a deinotherium, lying in the marshy grass. Dryopithecus, "an ape of great size", is hanging in a tree. The abundant vegetation is similar to our modern-day plants. The Miocene Epoch ranged from about 23 million years ago to 5 million years ago.
