The first part of the volume which is now published pre-sents the results of certain special topographical and geo-logical surveys made by Mr. Chance while acting as assistantto Mr. Carll in the Butler County Oil Region in 1876, andof the systematic detailed survey of the fifteen northerntownships of the county, which he was afterwards commis-sioned independently to make in 1878. In undertaking this survey he had the advantage of in-tercourse for consultation with Mr. Carll at the headquartersof the latter in Pleasantvillej where many of his illustra-tions were drawn; and his expressed opinions are there-fore in most respects those at which Mr. Carll had arrivedin the course of his study of the Oil Regions in 1874, 5 and6. But in some important particulars Mr. Chance arrivedindependently at views common to both.
