Whenever either of the foremen above named receives notice ofintended absence from the chief of battalion, he turns over the command of his company tothe assistant foremanorotherofficer, to be by him desig-nated, assumes command ofthe battalion, performs all theduties of the chief of bat-talion until his return toduty, and is obeyed and re- spected accordingly. In addition to a minuteinspection every year of theofficers and men of the sev-eral companies, the usualtime test of celerity in hitch-ing up is also made.
