On his return hewas appointed to command a force of two hun-dred men, for the support of a working party thatwas sent out, in the spring of 1754, to build a fortat the junction of the Allegheny and the Monon-gahela, where Pittsburgh now stands. The work-ing party reached the chosen ground in advanceof its military support, and was driven off by theFrench, who proceeded to build a fort of theirown, which they called Fort Duquesne.
