Prostate cancer radiotherapy scan. Ultrasound scan of the prostate (round, centre) of a patient being treated for prostate cancer. This stage of the process, known as a volume study, uses a trans-rectal ultrasound probe (not seen) to create a three-dimensional image of the prostate to aid planning of the next stage. Radioactive sources are then implanted in the tissue in a procedure known as brachytherapy, a form of radiotherapy. The radiation kills the cancerous cells.
