CT scanning. Woman patient under- goes a CT (Computed Tomography or CAT) scan of her chest. She is seen in the background lying on a mobile table which is passing through the circular scanner. In the foreground is the control room in which a radiologist remotely operates the scanner. On the screen (at right) are \slice\" images obtained of the patient's chest. CT scanning combines the use of a computer and fine X-ray beams to produce cross-sectional \"slices\" through the body. CT scans produce good contrast between soft tissues and bone, and are useful in diagnosing cancerous tumours and other disease."
