During the World War, Mr. Brandt was of serviceto the government as consultant with the Committee onStandardization of the construction department of thequartermaster corps, and was highly recommended bythis department for valued contributions to the causeof victory. Mr. Brandt was consulting housing engi-neer of the famous Nitro industrial city in Virginia,and when his plans were submitted to the authorities,they were so impressed with the practicability and ex-pediency of the proposition that work was at once be-. Every home in the new city was built in accord-ance with Mr. Brandts plans, most of which wereshipped from the mills in knocked-down form, and infour months two thousand homes, built for convenienceand comfort, were erected. The use of the fabricateddwelling resulted in a saving to the government offifty-seven thousand man days, at a time when time-saving was a paramount consideration. Mr. Brandtsonly remuneration for his services was the reward thatcomes v>fith the sense of a patriotic duty well per-formed, compensation that has brought the countrysleaders of industry, science, and finance to the com-mon standard.
