High magnification light micrograph showing three large thyroid follicles. The central colloid has undergone a small retraction and appears separated from the epithelium. At the edge of the colloid are clear areas. These are the so-called resorption lacunae, that were formerly interpreted as an evidence of colloid reabsorption. Today they are considered artifacts. Around the left are the thyrocytes forming a simple cubic epithelium. Magnification: x360 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
