This image may not be used to state or imply NOAO endorsement of any company or product Starbirth region NGC 2467. Gemini South telescope image of the emission nebula NGC 2467, a huge cloud of gas and dust where star formation is occurring. The nebula glows red as the hydrogen gas it contains is ionised by radiation from hot young stars within it. The dark blobs silhouetted against the bright nebula are Bok globules, dense gas and dust clouds in the final stages of collapsing into new stars. This nebula lies around 17,000 light years from Earth in the constellation Puppis. The image was taken on 5th December 2004 by the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS).
