There is a raft belongingto each, made of the wood of the tamarisk, fastened togetherwith a wattling of reeds; and also a stone bored through themiddle about two talents in Aveight. The raft is fastened to thevessel by a rope, and allowed to float down the stream in front,while the stone is attached by another rope astern.* The resultis, that the raft, hurried forward by tlie current, goes rapidlydown the river, and drags the baris (for so they call this sortof boat) ^ after it; while the stone, which is pulled along in stem, instances of which occur inmany countries at the present day;but many had two ruddeis, one ateach side, near the stern, suspendedat the gunwale (see cut No. I. i
