The young grasshopper, for example, hatches, from an egg laid in the ground, with a ridiculously large head and staring eyes; still there is no difficulty in recognizing its relationships. During the next week internal changes take place. The shell is burst, and the grasshopper emerges, looking more like its parents than before. This process is repeated four or five times during the next few weeks, and the gradual changes thus produced finally bring the young insect to the adult form.
