Birmingham's City Hospital, less than a mile from the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital in Smethwick, is to set to be demolished, making way for new housing. Birmingham's City Hospital, less than a mile from the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital in Smethwick, is to set to be demolished, making way for new housing. The Victorian City Hospital has one of the longest Corridors in Britain, a quarter of a mile in length, which will also be lost to developers. Only the new silver Treatment Centre and the Eye and Skin hospital will remain functioning on site with the rest being bulldozed for 800 homes. The Midland Metropolitan super hospital site, costing 988 Million pounds, was expected to be finished in October 2018 before Carillion collapsed into administration. The hospital, located 4 miles from Birmingham city centre, was then plagued with problems after a crane collapsed into the building during construction in 2019 and then the site was affected by coronavirus delays with a second delivery date of 2022 also passed. The facade also had to be replaced in the wake of new fire safety regulations, as a result of these fresh delays, planned opening dates in early 2023 and 2024 were also missed.
