Among hundreds of the which 1 have seen upon the highlands and mountains in this state, 1 havenever met with an individual answeringto the description here given. * Shawcalls the color of the stripes of both thesespecies bluish-green, from which it isprobable that his descriptions were madefrom specimens preserved in spirits, sincethe yellow stripes in these serpents, un-der such circumstances,assume that —~C THE BROWN SNAKE. Coluber ordinaltts.—LiNNJEUS. Description.—Brownish ash or clay color above, lighter beneath ; a light stripe along the back from the head to the tail, on each 6ide of which is a row of black spots, and two rows of similar spots, butmuch smaller, along the extremities ofthe abdominal plates on each side, thespots becoming obsolete towards the tail;scales carinated, small on the back but in-creasing in size towards the belly ; headsmall, covered with ten plates of an olivebrown color, the two posterior, and themiddle one between the eyes, upper jaw is margined by M scales,and the lower by 12, besides the tip ; anoblique black hand crosses the angle ofthe mouth, and another a little back of iton the upper part of the neck ; teeth inboth jaws, and two rows of hooking teethin the palate; eyes small ; iris bright ha-zel.
