Members of the joint Soviet-American Bering Bridge Expedition listen to speakers during a ceremony in honor of their arrival. Organized to promote better relations between the United States and the USSR, the expedition encouraged natives of Alaska to visit relatives in the Soviet Union. Team members trekked 800 miles through the Soviet Union to the International Date Line and then continued on to Little Diomede.
