. The anatomy and physiology of the human body. Containing the anatomy of the bones, muscles, and joints; and the heart and arteries . anatomy, it only re-mains to show the nature of the hydrocele. The hydrocele is a collection of water within the sac of thetunica vaginalis ; that is, betwixt the tunica vaginalis and tu-nica albuginea. For, as we have seen, that the same surfaceof the vaginal coat is contiguous to the surface of the testicle(viz, the albuginea,) with that of the peritoneum, which iscontiguous to the viscera of the belly ; and as it has the sameexudation, so it has the same disease, viz. a collection of wa-ter, from the absorption being disproportionate to the exuda-tion. When the tunica vaginalis is distended with the waterof a hydrocele, the testicle is towards the back part of thescrotum ; it can be felt there ; and when the scrotum is placedbetwixt the candle and the eye, we see the transparent sacon the forepart of the tumour, the opaque mass of the tes-ticle behind ; generally the distended vaginal coat stretches upbefore the cord conically: thus : Sixth Plan of the Vol. 298 OF THE TESTES. A, the penis; it is generally corrugated thus, in consequenceof the distention of the scrotum in scrotal hernia and hydro-cele : B, the scrotum : C, the testicle, covered only by the tu-nica albuginea : D, the cellular membrane of the cord : E, thetunica vaginalis, distended with the water of hydrocele, andconsequently separated from the surface of the testicle : F,that part of the sac of the \aginal coat, which often expendsconically before the cellular membrane of the cord D. Nowwe see that the distention of the vaginal coat does not openup the old communication with the belly ; but that the formercommunication being shut, and the peritoneum there degene-rated into the cellular ipembrane of the cord, the hydrocele isa distinct sac, surrounding the testicle, and formed of the tu-nica vaginalis. To understand this subject of the coat
