Tarleton, Lancashire. UK Weather 22 June 2021; Migrant field workers from the Ukraine have a early morning start harvesting Celery as supermarket demand for salad crops surges due to the continuing hot weather. Ukrainian migrants are a huge source of labor across Europe, making up the largest group of migrant workers on the continent. Ukraine’s migrant workers, many of whom look for work through recruiting firms, are primarily working in low-wage jobs on farms picking fruit and produce. Credit MWI/AlamyLiveNews

Growing celery (Apium graveolens) is generally considered to be the ultimate vegetable gardening challenge. It has a very long growing season but a very low tolerance for both heat and cold. Celery is not a fast crop, and it requires a fair helping of water. (I couple the water with a lot of mulch to help hold in any extra moisture that I provide.) But once celery is established, it thrives in the heat.
