West Coast Wilderness Railway (Abt Railway) following the King River in western Tasmania

Tasmania's West Coast Wilderness Railway (or simply Abt Railway) originally a vital access route for the remote mining town of Queenstown to the port of Strahan, now operates largely as a tourist excursion train but faces closure in 2013 unless capital can be found. The railway incorporates a rack-and-pinion system invented by Dr Roman Abt of Switzerland, enabling it to climb the range between the two towns. For much of the journey the railway follows either of two rivers once heavily polluted by mine waste.
