NASHVII^LE, TENN. St. Valentine's Day. St. Valentine's day is a big day for the florist. It has been coming for some time, but it is not "coming" any longer; it has arrived. If you do not believe it, a look into the iceboxes of the Nashville florists the day after would have convinced you. All told the same story, that St. Valentine's day was almost a second Christmas. We were in three of the stores February 14 and we doubt if the sales force even had time to notice that we were there. Everyone was on the jump all the time. By night everything was sold out clean. The surprise of it all was how wide a range of flowers and plants sold. Cut flowers of all kinds went well, though of course the preference would have been for violets or sweet peas, had it been possible to secure them. Daffodils and other spring flowers proved popular as well, but when a customer could not get what he wanted, he took what he could get and was satisfied. There was a nice line of novelty bas- kets shown, as well as the old standard baskets and made-up boxes. Many pre- ferred these to anything else and as a result practically none were left when the day was over. The lesson seems to be, have good stock and put it up artis- tically. It will sell, no matter what it is. The Market. The season seems to be backward. Only twice before in the ten years we have been keeping a record, have we failed to have a good sprinkling of daf- fodils and hyacinths in the open by the middle of February, but this year we have none.
