AUSTRIA - 1988 May 27: 8 shillings postage stamp depicting Zwettl Monastery, 850th anniversary. Zwettl Abbey is a Cistercian monastery located in Zwettl in Lower Austria. The community now consists of 23 monks, who have care of fourteen incorporated parishes and four others. The monastery makes its living from a forest of about 2,500 hectares, a fish farm of 90 hectares, a farm of 110 hectares and the vineyards of Schloss Gobelsburg with about 35 hectares
Austria, is a country in the southern part of Central Europe, lying in the Eastern Alps. It is a federation of nine states, one of which is the capital, Vienna, the most populous city and state. After World War I, in 1918, the different nationalities established their own states and only the German-speaking parts remained, forming a republic under the name “Deutschoster-reich” (German Austria), which name was shortly again changed to “Austria.” In 1938 German forces occupied Austria, which became part of the German Reich.
