Twooutgoing lines, one 60,000 and the other20,000 volts, connected with Keswick andRedding. We found preparations alreadyin progress to receive the incoming linesof the California-Oregon Company uponthe completion of the new power linefrom Castella, a distance across countryof only thirty-four miles, but forty-ninemiles by road following the tortuouscourse of the Sacramento River. That trip from Kennett to Castellaserved to show our party the difficultiesthe companys engineers were experi-encing in building their power lines. Theroute lay through some of the most pic-turesque country in the world, as everyone knows, for we followed the twists ofthat plunging stream which has beenmade historical by railroad publicityagents and fishermen alike.
